Voting Question: Can This Happen? - Body Fat % Down & Muscle Mass Up?

I have a Tanita scales that measure weight, body fat %, muscle mass and water %. I weight myself at the same time every morning in the same condition. I stopped drinking alcohol 2 weeks ago and started going to the gym, along with walking and biking. I've also been eating much better. I haven't lost any weight, however my body fat % has dropped 2% and my muscle mass has gone up by around 5 pounds, but I read you can't lose body fat AND gain muscle at the same time. My body water % has gone up around 1%. Is this a myth and is what I'm reporting, sound like I'm moving in the right direction even though overall weight has stayed the same?  more

Resolved Question: How can women lose Body Fat%?

I am female, 5 11, I was 182 pounds, tanita scale says 32% body fat, 35 years old. I eat about 1500-1800 calories per day, spin twice per week, dance 2-3 per week, yoga once per week, body pump twice per week. It took me about 2 months to lose 16 pounds and 2% Body fat (198 to 182; 34 to 32). Now, then gained 5 pounds in 2 weeks and weigh 187 pounds. Stuck there for another 2 weeks. Please help me to lose weight and most importantly body fat %. Thanks.  more

Resolved Question: How much body fat is healthy for a 15 yr old girl?

Resolved Question: What body fat analyzer scale should I buy?

I'm looking to buy a body fat scale, and have no idea what one to buy. I have been told Tanita is a good brand, but I truly don't know. I'm not looking to spend too much on it (~$60), and I would like one that's got a body water % analyzer too, if possible. Does anyone have any experience with them? The ones I saw in the stores were ~$50, and were Taylor, Conair WeightWatchers, and Healthometer. I want to get this scale to monitor fat percentage. I am trying to lose weight, but mostly fat. My current weight isn't really high for my height or overweight, but my fat percentage (the last time I did an evaluation at the gym) was very high (27% ish). Just seeing the scale show a lower number doesn't mean I've actually done anything good for my body, which is why I want to monitor fat loss. And I like the water function because I never drink enough water and this would keep motivating me to drink more by scaring me every morning with low numbers. :o) I am aware of how to burn fat. This question pertains to the scale so I can monitor how much fat I burn.  more

Resolved Question: Tanita scales... how often do you have to change the batteries if you use on a daily basis?

Specifically if you have the BF-679W model (it's the one that measures weight, body fat, and body water)? I'd rather get a lithium battery scale, but the Tanita has such good reviews. Is there a lithium alternative that is comparable?  more

Resolved Question: Are there any gym rats out there? (pic inside)?

I'm a 22 year old female. Over the past 6 months I have gone from 127lbs down to 111 lbs (16 lb weight loss). I'm 5'5 and I don't have very much muscle tone (as you can see). My body fat on my Tanita scales says 23%. I would really like to get rid of my gut. I've always wanted a nice flat stomach. I am working on losing another 5 lbs through diet alone, but I realize that I will have to start exercising. How could I go about achieving my goals? What specific exercises would tone up my flabby belly? Possible NSFW underwear pic. Resolved Question: Is this enough for any results?

Recently things have become rather hassled between moving around and and extremely frustrating situation; nevertheless I currently am without much in the way of exercise equipment (even a mat) so I have been using my couch just for the time being. Anyhow I try to do three sets of twenty crunches (with a five count hold with each rep) daily, along with lifting weight (mild for the moment: three sets of fifteen at twenty pounds in each arm) My concern is due to the limitations for the while is this simply not enough for anything? If so that is perfectly fine, I would just like to know as it is bothering me. However could it be because I have only recently gotten back into do crunches that I just need to wait and keep at it for some result? Oh and in case this is necessary, I am 6'4, weight 154lbs with a body fat percentage that alternates between 7.5 to 10% (Tanita scale, however accurate that thing is. I have my doubts as it changes on the drop of a dime sometimes.)  more

Resolved Question: Are the tanita scales really all that accurate?

(Notice: Reposting because for some reason the location was altered.) Curiosity here for the better part. I found it somewhat humorous today that according to the tanita scale I have, I have gained body fat despite having started exercises again, whereas prior to this week I was going nothing and was 7.5% (now it claims 10%) Granted I guess it could have something to do with food, although I sincerely doubt it considering the "worst" thing I had was cereal. Anyhow so back to the question, are these scales even remotely accurate or best suited as a guideline?  more

Resolved Question: healthy body fat percentage?

i am 13 and weigh 105 lbs. I am 5 feet 3 inches, and extremely athletic. we own a TANITA scale that that says i have 8-10% body fat, which is my goal. is that healthy? my bmi is 18.6, almost underweight, i know, but i have a high metabolism and i eat a ton of healthy food. i exercise every day. i play football, basketball, martial arts, wrestling, and track. i live in oregon but i dont think that has anything to do with this question... except that i run a lot because of NIKE...  more

Resolved Question: How can I find out my truly ideal weight?

I've used various calculators, some of which say that at 5'4" 126 I am too heavy, some that say right in the middle. How can I really know for sure? I have a body fat Tanita scale that shows anywhere between 20.5% when dehydrated to 15% when fully hydrated/full stomach.  more

Resolved Question: Tanita bodyfat scales - are they accurate?

Resolved Question: tanita large dial scale...is it any good? Accurate?

I am looking for a good scale. I have a taylor digital scale and hate it! It weighs me anywhere from 143 to 150 every time i get on it. Can any one tell me about the dial scale as opposed to the digital? HELP  more

Resolved Question: why does it tell me two different body fats?

My tanita scale which measures my body fat while weighing me usually says I'm between 37-38% body fat. I did a few body fat calculators on some websites. one said I was 50% body fat, the other said 43.65%. I want a better idea of what my body fat is. which method is closer to the truth, the scale or the web site calculators?  more

Resolved Question: DCI / Metabolic age?

Hello, I just purchased a Tanita body composition scale and the DCI / Metabolic age reading was 2113 / 46. Tanita, BC533, was programmed for my specs and I wouldn't dare eat that many calories. Is that for someone who is age 46? That measurement is confusing to me and would like an interpretation. Thanks. "have a look on the box and see what the measurements are actually supposed to be reading." No such thing to look at. There are only examples of what might be shown. DCI, daily caloric intake to maintain current weight should be less than 2K for me. Metabolic Age can range from 0 to 50 and I have no idea what it should be for optimum. FWIW, I'm not pleased with that measurement from Tanita.  more

Voting Question: BMI and body fat percentage?

I bought a Tanita scale. It says it measures 3 things: (1) Weight (2) Body Fat percentage (3) Body Water percentage. Is the Body Fat percentage (which has been around 27.5 to 28.5 ) the same thing as a BMI ? I know I am 10 to 20 lbs overweight.  more

Resolved Question: Minimum body fat for females?

I've had 2 different body fat monitor scales in the past few years, but I think the readings must be off - what's the minimum body fat for a female in early 20s? Both of my scales were giving me readings around the 5%-8% area (5% at night, 7% and change in the am) . . . has anyone else compared Tanita body fat monitors with something more accurate like water displacement or a bodpod?  more

Resolved Question: With this plan, is it possible for me to get 6 packs by the end of summer?

Ok, so i'm 5'6" and 150 lbs and 17% body fat according to my Tanita scale. I've been working out for about 6 months now with mostly cardio and have lost 13lbs since November. I'm trying to turn it up a notch now to attain my goal of having a 6 pack by the end of summer Sept 21st... I currently do interval training on a bike or running for about 30 minutes 2-3 times a week. Weights for an hour for 2-3 times a week and I ride my bike to the gym and back, 3.5 miles each way. Play some kind of sport atleast once a week, whether it be softball, tennis, or mountain biking. Some of these things I'll do on the same day because of time contraints. I've lowered my carb intake and have partitioned my meals to rougly 5 small meals a day now. My fat is generally evenly distributed through my body, so my stomach isn't especially fat, just consistent with everything else. Is it possible for me to reach my goals or do I need to turn it up.  more

Resolved Question: Can I trust the trend of my body fat scale?

I have gained 5 pounds since January; however, my body fat has gone from a high point of 20 to a high point of 18.5 when dehydrated, and a low point of 17 to a low point of 14.5 when fully hydrated. Can I trust that my body fat has indeed gone down, even though Tanita scales aren't always 100% accurate about body fat?  more

Resolved Question: If a body fat scale is inaccurate, is it usually too high or too low?

I'm talking about the electronic, Tanita type. I get a reading as high as 20% in the morning, while my body water % is low, or as low as 14%. I'm wondering what the actual number is.  more

Resolved Question: Problem with weight loss?

I asked this question months ago, thought i'd ask again to see if i get a better answer, since i am still in the same situation. My 130 dollar Tanita weight scale never shows me less than 255lbs, since Dec of 2005. Over the months following Dec 2005, i have gotten much more stamina and strength but i am still at 250+lbs. I dont eat very much, i snack a bit. i like to get in Unsaturated fats because it helps with a lot of stuff. I eat a bit of sugar sometimes to not make me go crazy lol. But overall i usually eat mostly veggies, chicken, other lean meats, bread (but not too much), ect. I am very active, i get on the computer maybe 3 sometimes 4hrs a day and im usually out and about, or working out, or workin on the backyard the rest of the time. My job consists of me walking 6hrs a day also. I'm 21yr old male by the way. My question is why is it hard for me to lose this weight? I never had this problem before. Responding to some questions from some of you. My BMI according to http://nhlbisupport.com/bmi/bmicalc.htm is 35.9. This is not true however, my scale tells me i'm in the mid 20s. I am muscular build, 17 inch biceps, big pecs, ect. I worked out since i was 14, but i quit 4yrs ago and started again last yr. I might have gained muscle since Dec 2005, i did a lot of hard construction work and painting on my house. I also carry 40+lbs boxes and other merchandise in my job on a daily basis. Hope that covers it.  more

Resolved Question: Sudden 7pt increase in BMI w/ 3lb weight change... Should I worry?

I have never witnessed such a jump, and my scales is flashing "O" for obese. My scale is working accurately. Should I contact my Dr?  more
