Resolved Question: Did you take the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) and not understand what the AFQT score is?

The test was given to over 11,000 students in 1980 between the ages of 16-23... and this is who you are being compared to when you receive your AFQT score. Read below to understand exactly what that score means. Read below and you'll find out there is not much difference between a 99 and a 69. But there can be a huge difference between two people with the same 99 score. Also, an AFQT score of 80 could have actually scored more questions right on the overall test than a person who scored a 99. The Army converts the ASVAB sub test scores into 10 composite score areas, known as "line scores." The line scores determine what job(s) an individual qualifies for. The ASVAB sub tests are: General Science (GS); Arithmetic Reasoning (AR); Word Knowledge (WK); Paragraph Comprehension (PC); Numerical Operations (NO); Coding Speed (CS); Auto and Shop Information (AS); Mathematics Knowledge (MK); Mechanical Comprehension (MC); Electronics Information (EI); and Sum of Word Knowledge and Paragraph Comprehension (VE). Army Line Scores are determined as follows: (These will determine which jobs you qualify for, from the aptitude battery anyway) CL—Clerical—VE+AR+MK CO—Combat—AR+CS+AS+MC EL—Electronics—GS+AR+MK+EI FA—Field Artillery—AR+CS+MK+MC GM—General Maintenance—GS+AS+MK+EI GT—General Technical—VE+AR MM—Mechanical Maintenance—NO+AS+MC+EI OF—Operators and Food—VE+NO+AS+MC SC—Surveillance and Communications—VE+AR+AS+MC ST—Skilled Technical—GS+VE+MK+MC The AFQT score is not derived from all portions of the ASVAB. Indeed, the score is determined from only four areas. The score is computed as follows: The first step is to determine your Verbal Expression (VE) Score. This is done by adding the value of your ASVAB Word Knowledge (WK) Score to the values of your Paragraph Comprehension (PC) Score. This result is then compared to a chart. The below chart gives you your scaled VE Score. VE = Scaled Score of WK+PC, then use the chart. WK+PC of 0-3=VE 20; WK+PC of 4-5=VE 21; 6-7=VE 22; 8-9=VE 22; 10-11=VE 25; 12-13=VE 27; 14-15=VE 29; 16-17=VE 31; 18-19=VE 32; 20-21=VE 34; 22-23=VE 36; 24-25=VE 38; 26-27=VE 40; 28-29=VE 42; 30-31=VE 44; 32-33=VE 45; 34-35=VE 47; 36-37=VE 49; 38-39=VE 50; 40-41=VE 52; 42-43=VE 54; 44-45=VE 56; 46-47=VE 58; 48-49=VE 60; 50=VE 62; The formula to derive the AFQT is 2VE + AR (Arithmetic Reasoning) + MK (Mathematics Knowledge). To Compute your AFQT Raw Score, use the formula AFQT = 2VE + AR + MK. To Compute your AFQT Raw Score, use the formula AFQT = 2VE + AR + MK Standard Score Percentile: An ASVAB composite score of 80-120 = 1% AFQT. Or to put it another way, only 1% of those tested scored lower than you on the ASVAB. An ASVAB composite score of 121-124 = 2%; 125-127 = 3%; 128-131 = 4%; 132-134 =5%; 135-137 = 6%; 138-139 = 7%; 140-142 = 8%; 143-144 = 9%; 145-146 = 10%; 147-148 = 11%; 149-150 = 12%; 151-153 = 13%; 154 = 14%; 155-156 = 15%; 157-158 = 16%; 159-160 = 17%; 161-162 = 18%; 163-164 = 19%; 165 = 20%; 166-167 = 21%; 168-169 = 22%; 170-171 = 23%; 172 = 24%; 173-174 = 25%; 175 = 26%; 176-177 = 27%; 178 = 28%; 179-180 = 29%; 181 = 30%; 182 = 31%; 183-184 = 32%; 185 = 33%; 186 = 34%; 187-188 = 35%; 189 = 36%; 190 = 37%; 191 = 38%; 192 = 39%; 193 = 40%; 194 = 41%; 195-196 = 42%; 197 = 43%; 198 = 44%; 199 = 45%; 200 = 46%; 201 = 47%; 202 = 48%; 203 = 49%; 204 = 50%; 205 = 51%; 206 = 52%; 207-208 = 53%; 209 = 54%; 210 = 55%; 211 = 56%; 212 = 57%; 213 = 58%; 214 = 59%; 215 = 61%; 216 = 62%; 217 = 63%; 218 = 64%; 219 = 65%; 220 = 66%; 221 = 67%; 222 = 68%; 223 = 69%; 224 = 70%; 225 = 71%; 226 = 72%; 227 = 73%; 228 = 74%; 229 = 75%; 230 = 76%; 231 = 77%; 232 = 78%; 233 = 79%; 234 = 80%; 235 = 81%; 236 = 82%; 237 = 83%; 238-239 = 84%; 240 = 85%; 241 = 86%; 242 = 87%; 243 = 88%; 244 = 89%; 245 = 90%; 246 = 91%; 247 = 92%; 248 = 93%; 249 = 94%; 250 = 95%; 251 = 96%; 252 = 97%; 253 = 98%; 254-320 = 99%. (The questions are weighted and only the DoD knows that information, but that is how you can score well above the same person with a 99. There can be two AFQT scores of 99 but one has a 260 composite score and the other a 320 composite score. Army recruits must score at least 31 on the test, with no more than 10 percent per year being high school dropouts. Exceptions are made for some recruits with scores as low as 26. To even be considered, a high school (GED) must score at least a 50 on the AFQT. AFQT Scores are divided into the following categories: Category I = 93-100% Category II = 65-92% Category IIIA = 50-64% Category IIIB = 31-49% Category IVA = 21-30% Category IVB = 16-20% Category IVC = 10-15% Category V = 0-9%.  more

Resolved Question: I really need to lose weight. Listen to my story and give me some opinions or advice?

When I was younger, I was always chubby. Because of neglect from my mom, I lived with my grandparents who fed me McDonalds and fast food for a good portion of my childhood. My grandparents got evicted from their house when I was 12, and I weighed about 165 pounds. So at that point, I lived with my mom again because my grandparents moved many many miles away from my school. She did not feed me very well, and so I had thinned out quite a bit. I had reached 135 pounds at 5'4 and at the age of 16, and was so close to my ideal weight. I was so excited for this summer because I knew I was going to be able to sport my beach body because I would only need to lose about 8 more pounds to be comfortable with where I was weight wise.. I can only assume the reason why I lost so much weight was from hardly eating. However, I moved in with my grandparents' this past December I am now 17. All the meals they have provided have primarily been fast food. Since December, only 3 and a half months ago, I have gained about 50 pounds. Oh my god, I almost weigh 190 pounds now, just within a 3-4 month period. I believe I gained weight so quickly because I had only lost the weight due to malnutrition and undereating on my moms part.. I gained this weight SO quickly that I hardly had any time to notice my weight gain and turn the habits around... For the past two weeks I have been cutting nearly all fats, but have been eating things like spaghetti, and drinking brisk tea and a mountain dew here and there, so my carb intake is still slightly high... I decided I was just going to eat healthy and exercise here and there to lose the weight. However, it is only tonight that I have found out I weigh 190 pounds because I was too scared to face the scale.. And I am now noticing faint red stretch marks around my navel, which is totally awful to me. I always have had streth marks on my sides, but have always feared getting them on the front of my belly... They are hardly there, so I'm praying with my diet turn around and a lot of cocoa butter, they will not be noticable soon.. So now I am at a point where I am totally disgusted with myself.. I cannot believe how I gained this weight. I just feel totally jaded with the food my grandparents provided for me, and the fact that I was not able to eat healthy while with my mother... Anyways, thanks for reading my story. Now here are my questions. Since I gained the weight so quickly, will I be able to shed the pounds easier than weight aquired over a long period of time? How long will it take me to lose about 65 pounds and be healthy? What kind of a workout/diet do I need to follow to lose this amount of weight before the summer? I am totally desperate and will do everything it takes to lose this weight. Since these stretch marks on my navel are very new, and very faint and tiny, and I am using cocoa butter on them every day, what kind of affect will they have on my body? Also, please keep in mind with diet suggestions that I am only seventeen. I do not always have resources to something very healthy, nor will I always be able to eat something healthy 5 times a day. What are some good things I can supplement for meals that are low at cost and convenient to eat? Thank you in advance..  more

Resolved Question: how was my eating and exercise today?

i have a hard time eating a 'healthy' amount of food per day--either i'll eat 600 calories or i'll eat 2600. how would you rate my diet and exercise for the day? 1 banana (90 cals) *ran about 7 mph for 1 hour* 12 oz coffee: espresso with fat free milk and chocolate powder (180 cals) 1 luna bar and tangerine (213 cals) spinach and strawberry salad (~80 cals?), luna bar and apple (260 cals) 1 cup kettlecorn (110 cals) spinach and tangerine salad w/ dressing (100 cals?) 6 pieces pineapple (50 cals) polenta (70 cals) with black beans, tomato sauce, pesto (150 cals) 1 apple (80 cals) =1383 calories consumed (i'd say 1483 because portion sizes aren't exact) i'm 5'8.5", 136 lbs, and most days i swim hard for 2.5 hours...couldn't make it to practice today. i'd like to lose weight, but i'm gaining muscle from swimming so the scale doesn't really move. how would you rate my food intake with exercise? should i be eating more or less? what foods should i be eating more of?  more

Resolved Question: Trying to lose 100 lbs by the end of April! What's Happening!?!?!?!?!?!?

I started my weight loss journey in September of 2008 weighing in at an embarrassing 225 pounds. I'm 27 years old and I'm 5'1'' tall. I wouldn't say I was slender in my younger years, but before kids, I managed to stay between 120 & 140. I've had 2 kids in the last 5 years, and my husband and I have decided that we are done. So I finally made myself start getting into shape. I gave myself a weight lost goal of 100 lbs. To make a long story short. I started my workout with 2 mile walks at about 3.5 miles an hour. After losing about 20 pounds, I added in a high intensity step aerobic for an hour per day. After losing another 20 pounds, doing both of these exercises together 7 days a week, I added in a 16 minute Ab workout everyday and a 1 hour trip to the gym once a week. By Christmas 2008 I had lost 50 lbs. Weighing in at 175. After Christmas I continued with this high intensity routine that I made up (walk 2 miles per day, 1 hour of high intensity step aerobics, 16 minutes of AB workout, and a 1 hour trip to the gym once a week). By mid January I hadn't lost any weight at all!!!! The scale was officially stuck on 175! I had heard of plateauing duing weightloss, so I changed up my workouts, and doing them even more intensely and I added in running stairs for 30 minutes per day (2 /15 minute session). As of today I'm pretty much still at 175! The scale has been fluctuating between 170 and 175 from day to day. Which I expect a fluctuation, but I can't seem to get out of the rut I'm in. I'm sure you are wondering what have I been eating. Basically I eat what I want when I want, but I make really smart choices about the types of food I eat. I do allow myself one meal of fast food per week, usually on Friday night because we have family night, and usually one sweet per week (a piece of cake, ice cream...) Typical breakfast is 2 pieces of fruit, a bottle of water, and a bowl of bran cereal, Lunch is maybe a plain turkey sanwich, or soup, and atleast one piece of fruit, Dinner is usually some type of baked meat, like chicken or porkchops (lean as possible) a vegetable, and a starch, usually rice, sometimes mashed potatoes. I eat 3-4 snack per day, usualy being fruit, sometimes a granola or protein bar. I take portion control very seriously so I measure out everything that eat. I make sure my main meals don't go over 350 calories, snacks- no more than 200 calories. I usually end up with a average calorie count of about 1500-1800 calories per day. And I've estimated that I'm burning about 2,887 calories per day. Sometimes I calorie shift if I'm feeling particulary heavy that week so calories my days would avg this : 900, 1200, 1500, 700, 1800, 1000, 800 So my question is: What's going on!!!!!!!! LOL What can I do or change to reach my goal of 100 lbs lost? Ps. I'm not doing any real weight training. I haven't been able to afford to buy any weights, but I have made some homemade weights that I workout with everyday. P.S.S. I forgot to add that I drink lots and lots of water, and only water. I average about a gallon and a half of water per day. I don't drink juices, sodas, tea or coffee! I should mention that when I say fast food I usually stick to Grilled chicken sandwiches, their soups, and not even half of a small fry. And Of course water. So Even though I do fast food, I still make sure I stay close to my calorie count for that meal. The same thing goes for something sweet. If I have cake, I'll do a half slice, or ice cream, just one table spoon. It's a treat, not a binge.  more

Resolved Question: Just how many portions of chips/Fries am I supposed to eat to put weight on?

The last few weeks I have changed my eating habits around, from what they were used to be to what they are now. The ironic thing is I am eating much, much more eating when I should and three times a day yadda yadda yadda, donuts, pastries, chocolates, chips/fries, pasta, meat, fruit which is a total turn around. The problem however is I am one of these curiously morbid creatures which science has no name for and for which even the scientific community would think "Alas. Frankenstein." In other words I can eat, and eat, and eat and does the Magickal little sticky thing on the scales - no not me - move an inch? Does it even move a centimetre? Its almost like my stomach is a bottomless pit. In the past I've spoken to Nutritionists and of course the one I saw turned out to have taken a Saul to Damascus type conversion and took her job seriously, a bit too seriously and rather than slowly succumb to be a would be scientific experiment with various exercies I thought it was far too over the top. One pharmacist said, "Eat lots and lots of Mars Bars." good idea if I liked Mars Bars. In a nutshell its the fact that I, even though I am now making it part of my dietary regime to eat Fish and Chip Shop, Chips three times a week there is no noticeable difference, this food has to go somewhere. By the way I am 32. 5'11 in height. And, yes I know.... *Waits for the audience to gasp in horror and go *"AAAAAHHHHHH I Am speaking to the stick man." I weigh 119lbs *Goes off to chuck a slab of butter on bread to see if that will make a bit of difference* To add: I walk everywhere. Hardly catch buses unless I'm going further afield from which I live. And carry a large Holdall/Rucksack on my back so I get exercise that way.  more

Resolved Question: Fat, Underweight, Bloated?

Hi, I am about 5 lbs underweight at the moment. I am athletic and ran 6-10 km every day prior to getting the flu 3 weeks ago. After a trip to the doctor I discovered that I was about 15 lbs underweight and I supported this because was constantly cold (even before the flu). At the end of my flu, I ate extra portions of healthy food. Since I haven't eaten junk in over a year I didn't feel tempted to start. I only ate whole grains (non-whole wheat pasta once or twice), nuts, fruits + vegetables, lean meat but no dairy (flu). I only ate extra for about 4 days and the scale says that I am 5 lbs underweight, water % is 68 and my fat % is about 6-7. I feel fat right now, when I went back to school yesterday my friend said that I look fatter than before. This made me feel bad. I am fairly muscular and did eat a lot of salty foods during those 4 days which probably caused some bloating. I know that the water weight will drop by about 5 lbs but I am scared that if I gain fat I will feel the way that I do now. I am 6'3 and currently 155 lbs. I realize that one solution may be to lift weights only my parents don't want me at the gym since I was just sick and another problem is that I feel hungry all the time now (i used to eat the same amount but I was exercising), my parents say that this is my body trying to get up to a normal weight. Should I gain weight or maintain? Its hard to maintain.  more

Resolved Question: Why did I gain weight the first week of my diet?

I have been watching what I eat for about 6 weeks now. A week and a half ago, I decided to really step it up. I've kept a detailed food diary, and have been eating mostly vegetables, whole grains, yogurt, and lean protein. I weigh my food on a scale and play close attention to portion size. I do not snack and I do not consume sugar in any form. I also have been jogging at gym every single day at my ideal target heart rate. Going by the calories I've eaten and burned, I should have lost about two pounds. However, my waist size went up by two inches and the scale says I have gained 4 pounds! I am on a prescription diuretic, so I don't see how this could be water weight. I also know that it's not possible to gain 4 lbs of muscle in a week. Please can someone tell me what might be going on?  more

Resolved Question: i can't gain weight!?

I'm 14 and about 5'6". i never ever exercise but i don't gain a pound. it's pretty much impossible. seriously i tried to gain at least a little. i ate nothing but junk food and huge portions and cookies and chips and i don't even know what else. i can still eat a whole pizza pie and once i ate 9 plates of spaghetti [literraly] but then i didn't have any mroe cus there wasn't any more... but i pretty much gave up on that cus the most i gained in like a week or two was 3 pounds. i don't have a scale at home but i'm like 105-110? anytime i gain weight i just lose it the next day. my metabolism is like super fast. well. i used to play soccer 2 years ago and before that i was a gymnast. but last year i did absolutely nothing. and this year im starting to play lacrosse but we haven't even really started. how can i gain weight? im not that like abnormally light...[i think??? am i?] but if i suck in my stomach i could probably get a piercing from my stomach to my back. so does anyone know how to gain weight?? gaining muscle will just speed up my metabolism and i already eat like a pig. i don't want to get taller just a little bigger. I also haven't gotten my period yet. btw. i mean its not that bad but one of my friends is starting to think that i am anorexic or belimic or something but trust me that is impossible.  more

Voting Question: Why am I not losing weight?

I've started out 143 pounds, and in a week or so lost 1 pound. I've been eating healthy, cut out chips and sugary foods, watched my portions, been exercising more, and now my scale says I have gained 5 pounds. What am I doing wrong? Also, my period is going to start any day now, and I've heard that you can gain weight before your period because youre bloated or something but it goes away  more

Resolved Question: Afraid to lose weight?

I'm 5'5"1/2 and around 165 lbs (haven't used a scale in a while). I'm a healthy eater and I get moving everyday. I'd like to get out of a size 9/11 and back into a size 5. However, my size 5 pants are from when I had an eating disorder, which I think might be why I'm so afraid. I've been 140 before, and it looked rather ideal for me. Since I had an eating disorder, I lost the weight quickly. The skin was tight on my ribs, so when I stretched or breathed, it would hurt. I'm certain that this would be the case again if I lost weight the healthy way, since my belly really isn't large at all, so it wouldn't take much to lose it. It just looks VERY odd looking in the mirror and not seeing a belly on me, which also scares me. Losing fat makes me feel like I'm gaining appeal, but losing some sort of defense barrier, which seems to be more important than looks. Being skinnier makes me feel 'smaller' and weaker, and the fear just makes me start eating huge portions of food and junk food until I'm back to where I started. I feel that this fear would be easy to overcome with some helpful words.  more

Voting Question: i still haven't lost any weight, i need to lose 5 pounds by winter break!?

i've started to eat much healthier, and i've been running on my familys elliptical for 30 minutes 5-6 times a week, yet i still haven't lost any weight i suppose my stomach looks better than the previous week, definitely healthier...and i know the scale shouldn't matter as long as you look better, but i'd really like to just lose 5 pounds i think i could eat much healthier though because my mom often makes pasta and other starchy, carb filled foods, although i always eat only a small portion whenever she makes those foods, so i try to fill up on the veggies and fruits of those meals. If i continue my simple workout and step up my healthy eating will i start to see a smaller number on the scale? also what are some healthy foods that i can get my mom to cook in order to continue a healthy eating life style? also, please give me answers other than it's muscle gain because i'm just pretty sure it's not...i don't think i could gain enough muscle to gain anything with 5 days of exercise  more

Voting Question: Is this a good life style change plan? ( diet )?

I trying to do a life style change on my own! I'm very over weight at 25 years old being 209lbs at only 5' 2". I kinda just blew up over a year period never changing any of my eating habits or activity habits, I have 3 kids but I didn't start gaining weight till my youngest child turned a year old, so ? I just don't have the will power to "DIET" so im doing a life style change, here is what im doing.... I'm not restricting any foods I'm eating small portions every 3 hours 4-5 times a day staying at or under 1,200 cal a day and drinking at least 8 bottles of water a day writing everything I consume down with the time Now I know I need to exercise but I need to get used to one change at a time. So for now I jump on the treadmill when I'm thinking about it, do 200 crunches every other day, I have weights that I curl when on the computer or watching tv, and I play catch with my husband or children every day. Right now I'm just trying to sneak exercise in my daily routine till I can get the discipline to follow a regiment. So am I on the right track? Do you think I will see a change? I also threw away my scale because I didn't what to get discouraged! one more thing I normally drink beer on a regular basis but I have gave it up too, haven't had any in a week, and it I have a beer in the future I plan on staying in my daily cal range and only drinking one ever so offten.  more

Resolved Question: How much longer before I see physical results?

I've been power-walking almost everyday for a month now and have yet to see physical results. Everyday, I only eat breakfast and dinner on a saucer (for small portion of food). I've been drinking milk plus lots of water and eating only veggies with soup and if I bite on snacks or fattening stuff I go bulimic. I power-walk and do short runs 30mins prior breakfast for an hour and 30mins after dinner for also an hour. (Although, sometimes I skip the morning exercise) Where am i doing wrong here? I've lost almost 10 pounds in the first 2 weeks but my guess they're all just shitty loads because now I'm not losing anymore pounds. I want to see physical change and not just whats on the scale. Body weight is 220 pounds. Height 5.6 feet. (Yes, I'm overweight)  more

Resolved Question: Losing weight? I'd appreciate your knowledge!?

I know everyone is sick of these questions, but I'm just really curious. Well. I weight probaly around 100kgs. I recently got an elliptical, and have been using it, according to it's distance calculator, for 4 miles a day at the hardest resistance. I have cut as much fat as I can, no fast food, no deserts etc, I don't eat red meat so all I eat is pasta and chicken anyway, and have tried to cut down on portion sizes. It's been a week, and I haven't really noticed a difference. I donow weight wise, because I am afraid to step on the scales. How long until I notice a change? Any motivation tips Hopefully, a year from now, I'll be asking "Why am I so damn hot?" Thanks guys  more

Resolved Question: How much weight can I realistically loose by the end of November?

I am 17 years old, female. I weigh about 180 lbs and am 5'5". I have successfully cut soda out of my diet for two weeks now. I am starting to try to become more active by walking. I am currently working on my habits of overeating-especially junk food. I am becoming more selective about unhealthy foods I eat. I'm not settling for any chips-only my favorite brand which I rarely get as they are only nearer to Central PA. The junk food I do eat, I am reducing my portions (Kid's meals at Fast Food restaurants, etc). I probably weigh a bit less than I mentioned, but I don't have a scale to verify. There is a church banquet in December, and I want to loose some weight before the event. How much weight can I realistically, and healthily loose? My diet is basically cutting down on junk food (not eliminating all completely as it is not practical for my life right now), and increasing veggies and whole grains. (I don't eat white rice, etc). I know that initial weight loss is greater, so keeping that in mind, about how much weight can I loose between now and the end of November? How many clothing sizes will it be possible for me to drop (I am size 10 bottom and size 16 top)? I will be doing some light strength training to tone my arms, legs, and midsection as I work towards loosing this weight. Thank you for the help! I'm planning on switching up between walking and bike riding for exercise, and once I get into the habit of exercising I'm going to start jogging.  more

Voting Question: Please Rate My Essay!?

All my accomplishments were hard won, but one stands out as the most difficult of all and provided the most satisfaction. Losing over 60 pounds in one year ranks as my greatest achievement. Sacrifices were made, changes were implemented and physical and mental boundaries were stretched. For as long as I can remember food was always abundant. Although I was never overweight, my eating habits were not the best and I was never interested in physical activities. Eventually my luck ran short and without noticing, I began gaining weight, little by little, until my sophomore year. At the age of fifteen, at 5’ 8” I already weighed 185 pounds, by all measures I was considered overweight. My moment of revelation literally stared me in the face—I looked in the mirror and didn’t recognize the reflection; I was disgusted with my form. From that day forward I decided not to be part of the growing 65% overweight Americans, instead I wanted to join the shrinking 35%. That was no ordinary day for me; it was the day a goal was set. Dieting was the beginning of my journey. My plan was to eat one big meal per day, but it could consist of any type of food. After one miserable month I was grateful to find that my weight had fallen to 165. At the second stage of my diet I did some research. I read that to speed up my metabolism I should eat five small portions of healthy food a day. The technique proved to work amazingly well; after eight weeks I weighed in at 140 pounds. This reading put me at the average level for my height, but there’s the problem, I’m not average I’m above and beyond average. There was still something missing—exercise. Porky’s Gym became my new hang out and provided more than enough equipment to burn off my excess fat and sculpt my body. Six months into a dedicated aerobic and weight-lifting program resulted in satisfaction on the scale my ideal weight, 125 pounds. Combining diet, exercise and will power finally resulted in a loss of 60 pounds. I feel ten times healthier and I’m proud that I was able to set my mind to a goal and successfully complete it. Through sheer determination I was able to achieve my greatest accomplishment of becoming a lean-mean fat burning machine. Please be honest, Thank You!! :D  more

Resolved Question: Mental health,Celiacs, physical health,Autistic intelligence,What is it that the Seeker knows?

The seeker has little time to answer and ask questions. He has a household to support. Yet the Seeker, speaking in obvious third person like Bob on Becker, continues to make outlandish claims in his questions column, while continually batting 900 in the mental and physical health Q and A section. It is like this. I claim to be an asperger. I claim to have healed myself. Let me focus in on one small thing , if the seeker can, Autistic born intelligence. If I dont draw a smaller picture, the public will never get the big. The center in the brain that is developing rapidly, i don't even know the technical name LOL, is responsible for many new processes that are not yet understood. They are not new processes. The are the refiring of processes that we ourselves have retarded. In our dietary evolution, the enemy we are so not willing to believe to be true,is the number one consumption need on the FDA food scale. In this cortex that is the center of the brain, we find many processes which are only now being understood. One thing for sure is that it is the addictive center of the mind. What is happening to it is a natural process called survival mode. when the body is depleted of what it needs to function properly, every mammal on the planet goes into a cortisol induced thought process. When this mammal is eating a food source that has less than possitive food value, and doing so in irrational proportion, In effect you simply starve your mind and body of what it actually needs. The number one food source is a pure allergen to many of us. It has derogatory effects on us. Our minds are carnivorous based, therefor require a carnivourus diet in order to feed ourselves. The gluten protien is the wrong protein for our minds center control to work with. Gluten protein in a gluten consuming animal is correct. It has the evolved processes which to break down the more complex gluten protien. Their mind operate correctly on it. When you introduce carnivourous proteins to the cow, you simply end up with cow parkinsons, called mad cow. The protein effects the center control of the cows gluten protein required brain. The same thing happens to the carnivorous beast when his simple one chambered stomache , try to properly break down the alien gluten protein. The wrong protein attacks the same center as the cows. The obvious and clear sciences that are coming from this are not Scientology, Scientology is just onto a small part of the truth. I will state , I do not believe any space ship will rescue a famous actor., or me. The minds center when gluten free, has a natural increase in blood to the brain. Strange "new firings" are seen in the center of the brain that resemble thought. This is why america is obeisce, this is why we are so mentally bipolar, this is why we are failing in mental health miserably. This is why we are rapidly falling backwards, while our specialties in technology rock and roll. Our general practice has fallen into an insurance controled very sad state. The seeker warns you all. You all laugh, i wish I could help. It is all i can do to type this silly little speach that will again be ignored. The seeker only wishes to share his happiness. This is not a thing that can be forced. Continue to opperate with small portions of your mind actually available. Continue to bicker and clammer and answer not one true topic of contention. I can do nothing but support my family. I am just an autistc moron. I am true asperger 5. You will not believe who and what I am until you ask. I will prey to my politically correct god. simple creation. Good luck to you. 5 mispellings with a 10th grade failing education. Does this say nothing? I should be dumb as a stump!  more

Resolved Question: Too much food for weight loss?

I am eating healthy food to try and lose a little weight. I have been doing this for the past three weeks. In the first week I lost 3 pounds, which I guess was just water weight, but for the last two weeks I haven't lost anything at all. I am starting to get frustrated and really want the scales to start moving! Breakfast: No added sugar or salt muesli (50g) with unsweetened soya milk (200ml) Lunch: Low fat houmous and carrott sandwich on wholegrain bread with an apple and tangerine Dinner: 1 portion of wholegrain carbs, 1 portion of lean protein plus 3 portions of veg, followed by a tangerine. If I get really hungry I may snack on some dried fruit or healthy nut butter but try not to. I also do 1 hour of running twice a week and 30 mins of stepping twice a week. Do you think I am eating too much for weight loss? Any advice welcome!  more

Resolved Question: Is my metabolism slowing down?

I am very depressed about my weight. I am 198.6 lbs, stand 5'6", and is 35 years old. I don't eat extremely bad. I have cut down tremendously on fast foods. I eat them every now and then, but I don't really overeat. I have been exercising all summer and have not lost anything, but 2 lbs. My clothes are still tight and I can barely get in them. The scary thing about it is that I will have eaten a pretty much healthy diet all week and the first time I eat something like a Big Mac or something, which is very seldom, I gain the one or two pounds back that I lost right away. Example, I have been exercising faithfully and eating a pretty decent diet, not drastically cutting back or anything, but watching my fat and portions, and my son 's school had a Pot-Luck Dinner last night for the parents to meet each other and the teachers. I ate one plate that was pretty much filled and I didn't go back for seconds. I had 1 srv. of lasagna, rotisseire chicken, string bean casserole, 3 BBQ meatballs, and one piece of pecan pie. I exercised for 30 min on the treadmill last night and this morning, I got on the scale and I gained 1 lb. I know they say that your metabolism changes after 30, but my metabolism must have completely stopped. I used to be able to watch what I eat and exercise and easily lose weight. Is this a 30s thing or am I doing something wrong? Help!!! Weight loss experts.  more

Resolved Question: Table Manners with friends/family

I have a 7-year old biological son, a 5-year-old step-daughter, and two foster kids: 12-year-old girl (I'll call her Sadie) and 15 year old guy (half-siblings, same mom). Sadie has a very serious weight issue. As in: she's 5'9 yes, at 12) and 220 lbs. I think that a person of her height 'should' weigh aprox. 150. I use this term loosely because I think any woman of her height who is 130 - 170 is probably in the 'OK' range. But she's way above that. So understandably, I've put her on a VERY restrictive diet. I don't SAY that, but I make it clear to all people in my household that the only times the kitchen are open are: 6 - 6:30 a.m.; 11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.; 3:30 - 4:00 p.m.; 5:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.; and 7:45 - 8:15 p.m. During these times, people can eat what's served to them or not eat at all. Either way, they are expected to show up a) on time and b) sit there until the time is up (half hour for snacks, hour for dinners). Then, they are free to do what they want within reason. If they don't eat anything, those items are presented at their next eating opportunity. If they don't eat it then, I put it in the compost pile or give it to the dog. I put a weekly menu of what is offered on the fridge and outside the kitchen so anyone can read it. They know what is coming. I padlock the kitchen shut and there are four exits outside of that in order to get ouside in case of a fire. So there is no health risk. The only real risk here is that you can't eat what you want, when you want. You eat what's presented or you don't eat. Simple. I also enforce exercise for three 15-minute sessions a day. On one of the three, I have fine motor-skills, and the others are gross motor skills. if they don't want to do the exercise for gross, they're expected to run or walk laps around our yard, or else if they don't want to do the fine, they are expected to do scales on the keyboard/piano. I don't think I'm being abusive, I think I'm being quite nice about it - however, my foster-daughter thinks I'm 'depriving' her of food and 'starving' her and being abusive. Since she's experienced abuse in the past, people are looking into mne. I am WAY too old to have someone try to do this to me. I am doing my best to discipline her and her brother. So . . .how do I convince her that I'm doing this for her own good? As you can see for the diet/exercise portion, all children are required to do this and she has plenty opportunities to eat. It's not just her - it's everyone and she NEEDS the restrictive diet. she's homeschooled because the 'teasing/' about being fat has 'traumatized' her so much. I'm giving her an opportunity to get RID of that option for people and she's being ungrateful! help! I want to say here that I know a little of these childrens' situation. I know enough that it was 'very abusive'. I know mor ethan that but out of respect to the children, I will not say waht. It was awful. Because of the number of children, because I work full-time from home (in order to provide for them), and go to school I NEED a LOT of scheduling. I do nurture them and love them. i always had these food rules before these particular foster children came to my house. It's not just because of 'Sadie' and her eating issues at all. it happens tob e an issue because she's getting an attitude about it. I want her to lose weight and learn good habbits to help HERSELF. It is not out of meanness.  more

Voting Question: Lose weight and gain muscle?

I am 14 years old, 5' and 140 lbs. (i don't have a working scale but the last time i checked my weight it was 140 lbs.) I want to drop my weight and gain some muscle. For the past few weeks, i've been walking for 30 minutes and lifting weights a couple times a week, and swimming 4 x a week. But at the same time, I'm eating a lot of different food, like salads and veggies one day but lots of rice and noodles the next (i'm Asian so that explains that haha) but I've been eating smaller portions and more water (so it's sort of a ratio of 2 glasses of water for a bowl full of rice). Am i prone to gain muscle easily this way? I'm not really into running or biking so what else could i do to lose weight/gain muscle?  more

Resolved Question: How long does it take to SEE results after fat has been burned and muscle gained?

I have been working out for 30 dys now at 5 dys a week. I run for 3-4 miles on the treadmill (30 - 40 min) and do another 2mls on the eliptical working arms and legs(20-30 min)... afterwards I do about 30 minuts of resistance training on arms/legs/stomach. Equalling 90 min. I have seen no weight loss as yet. I hear alot of people stating that I'm "gaining muscle and loosing fat and that muscle weigh more than fat"...my question is, how long does it take to actually "SEE" the results on the scale? I currently weigh 197lb trying to get to 155-160 by October 2008. I see definition in my legs and arms beginning to form, butt has even gotten more rounder. But I have no change in clothing fit or weight loss. I eat right. I have totally eliminated junk food, fried foods, breads, pastas, etc. I drink alot water during the day with portion control in my meals. Just trying to understand what I'm not doing right? Any suggesstion... maybe I just need to be patient and continue doing it  more

Resolved Question: GARLIC JIM'S questionnn??

Hi. My family are overtaking a franchise and the employees just broke the digital food weight scale that helps us control portioning. Does anybody know where I could get a similar weight scale or what the name of the brand is called? I looked online at google but i could not find a similar picture. i cannot take the picture because i dont have a camera with me or a key to open the store and get the weight scale. Any info is welcome. I can describe if that makes it easier. it is a regular scale but the LCD display of how much whatever u are weighing is displayed on another piece of the scale which can be clipped up anywhere and they are attached by a curly cord. so we would have the scale on the makeline and when we look up, the measurement is shown on a seperate "gadget" attached by a cord clipped or stuck to a shelf. im not sure. hope that helps, thanks for all the answers =]  more

Resolved Question: how did I gain weight when i've been dieting/exercising for 5 wks?! 10 pts pls answer?

Hi!! I've been dieting and exercising for 5 weeks straight now, about 2 and a half hours of really tough exercise everyday, always using new muscles groups etc. At first I was losing alot of weight, I dropped about 5lbs and all was well. But I only weigh myself every sunday when I wake up and my tummy is empty so that I can get an accurate measure, and this week I have gone up 6lbs in weight. I know I did not gain 6lbs in water weight, and I have been keeping a diary of my food and it has been very healthy and organic. I also gained an inch on my hips. Please someone tell me what this could possibly be? My muscles are hurting like crazy this mornning because I worked out really tough yesterday, but I drink alot of water through the day so my body shouldnt be retaining any. I eat really healthy small portions about 5 times a day. I never snack and I only drink water for when I'm thirsty. What could this be?! I didnt gain that much muscle that quickly. I'm using the same scale.  more

Resolved Question: 8 weeks of workouts and NO weight loss...tell me what's wrong please??

Ok, stats first: I'm 24, 5'2", 129 lbs, body fat percentage is 28%. Now the back story: I was an athlete all my life and maintaned a weight of 105-110lbs up until 2 years ago. I started taking Depo-Provera (the shot) for birth control and expected to gain a little weight. I ate reasonably before taking the shot, and during, I eat fresh foods in small portions, and not too much soda or fried stuff. In january, 2 years and 25lbs later, I decided to get off the shot. I started working out 8 weeks ago because I am going to a wedding in October and I want my body back! I went to the gym 5-6 nights a week, did 25-35 min of cardio on average at an intensity level that made me sweat and slightly out of breath; and used the weight machines. I continued to eat the same way I always did, reasonably. Yesterday I got on the scale for the first time. NOTHING HAD CHANGED. I am upset and perplexed by this. What am I doing wrong? Is this a hormone thing I should get checked out or...what?? HELP!  more

Resolved Question: Who didn't want their breakfast this morning?

KAMPONG SPEU, Cambodia - At dawn in a ramshackle elementary school in rural Cambodia, the children think of only one thing: their stomachs. They anxiously await the steaming buckets of free rice delivered to their desks. But by the end of the month, they will no longer get free breakfast from the U.N. World Food Program. About 450,000 Cambodian students will become the latest victims of soaring global food prices. Five local suppliers have defaulted on contracts to provide rice because they can get a higher price elsewhere, program officials say. Prices of rice have tripled on the global market since December. Faced with a shortfall of more than 14,000 tons of rice, and with more pressing needs to meet, the World Food Program stopped the free breakfasts in March. The schools' remaining stocks are expected to run out in the coming days. That will leave students without what was often the best meal they got all day. "I feel hopeless," said Boeurn Srey Leak, a 15-year-old in sixth grade. Rich countries have pledged $469 million for food aid to address what is expected to be a $755 million deficit, due to food prices that have risen 76 percent since December. The U.S., already the largest provider of food aid, is expected to contribute almost a third of that money. If Congress approves, the U.S. will contribute $770 million more to be available after Oct. 1. But the money will not arrive in time to save some food programs from being cut or ended. "I don't think there is a single program that doesn't have some kind of concerns because they have to scale down," said Susana Rico, an official of the World Food Program which feeds almost 89 million people worldwide, including 58.8 million children. "The majority of countries will suffer some kind of cutbacks in rations or programs in the next three to five months." The numbers are grim. In Burundi, Kenya and Zambia, hundreds of thousands of people face cuts in food rations after June. In Iraq, 500,000 recipients will likely lose food aid. In Yemen, it's 320,000 households, including children and the sick. Private aid agencies based in the U.S. also said food price hikes are hurting their projects. Mercy Corps will likely distribute 20 percent less food to Iraqi refugees in Syria and serve 12 percent fewer Colombian families fleeing violence in the countryside. World Vision may stop helping 1.5 million people — nearly a quarter of the number it serves — because of rising food prices and pledged donations not yet delivered. At least a third are children. In Cambodia, the free breakfasts that started in 2000 have made children visibly healthier, said Nheng Vorn, the principal of Choumpou Proek School, about 40 miles west of the capital, Phnom Penh. "They are more focused on lessons, and their reading ability has improved subsequently," he noted. But principals at many such rural schools don't have the money to replace the breakfast program. Girls in particular will be at risk of dropping out because families need them at home to work in the fields or help raise siblings, said Thomas Keusters, the World Food Program's Cambodia director. Children in Cambodia often start school late and repeat grades a lot, he said. "It's not uncommon to have a girl in grade five or six who is already 15 or 16 years old," Keusters said. "We are paying them to come to school. I'm very concerned about them because I have no rice." About six miles away from Choumpou Proek school, the students of Sangkum Seksa school devour hearty portions of rice, peas and sardines in the morning. The school has only 10 rooms, housed in two faded yellow concrete buildings. Some students go barefoot. "I can only feel pity for them," said the principal, Tan Sak. "I have no solution for them after the current stock is used up." Before the free breakfasts, many students left school before noon so they could eat lunch at home. "I had difficulty sitting in the class because my stomach was growling," Rim Channa, a 13-year-old fifth-grader. Now, once again, all they will have for breakfast is the tart fruit from the nearby tamarind trees.  more

Resolved Question: How can I lose some extra weight?

I'm 14 and 5'5' and i currently weigh 150lb. Around February, I was 142. I don't know how I gain so much weight. but I've been going on the treadmill for an hour or more every Monday through Fridays. I eat in portions and I know I'm a bit overweight. My BMI is 25 exact. And I'm just working towards flattening my stomach a little. I check the scale before I run and burn 480 calories and at home, I do plenty of housework that keeps my busy every day. But the number on the scale never changes ! Any suggestions? And no, I don't eat chips or drink soda or eat fast food. I've stopped eating them completely. i'd like to try to get to 130 lb. if that's possible. because i'm sorta big boned.  more

Resolved Question: your comments to this article???

In 1971, biologists moved five adult pairs of Italian wall lizards from their home island of Pod Kopiste, in the South Adriatic Sea, to the neighboring island of Pod Mrcaru. Now, an international team of researchers has shown that introducing these small, green-backed lizards, Podarcis sicula, to a new environment caused them to undergo rapid and large-scale evolutionary changes. “Striking differences in head size and shape, increased bite strength and the development of new structures in the lizard’s digestive tracts were noted after only 36 years, which is an extremely short time scale,” says Duncan Irschick, a professor of biology at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. “These physical changes have occurred side-by-side with dramatic changes in population density and social structure.” Researchers returned to the islands twice a year for three years, in the spring and summer of 2004, 2005 and 2006. Captured lizards were transported to a field laboratory and measured for snout-vent length, head dimensions and body mass. Tail clips taken for DNA analysis confirmed that the Pod Mrcaru lizards were genetically identical to the source population on Pod Kopiste. Observed changes in head morphology were caused by adaptation to a different food source. According to Irschick, lizards on the barren island of Pod Kopiste were well-suited to catching mobile prey, feasting mainly on insects. Life on Pod Mrcaru, where they had never lived before, offered them an abundant supply of plant foods, including the leaves and stems from native shrubs. Analysis of the stomach contents of lizards on Pod Mrcaru showed that their diet included up to two-thirds plants, depending on the season, a large increase over the population of Pod Kopiste. “As a result, individuals on Pod Mrcaru have heads that are longer, wider and taller than those on Pod Kopiste, which translates into a big increase in bite force,” says Irschick. “Because plants are tough and fibrous, high bite forces allow the lizards to crop smaller pieces from plants, which can help them break down the indigestible cell walls.” Examination of the lizard’s digestive tracts revealed something even more surprising. Eating more plants caused the development of new structures called cecal valves, designed to slow the passage of food by creating fermentation chambers in the gut, where microbes can break down the difficult to digest portion of plants. Cecal valves, which were found in hatchlings, juveniles and adults on Pod Mrcaru, have never been reported for this species, including the source population on Pod Kopiste. “These structures actually occur in less than 1 percent of all known species of scaled reptiles,” says Irschick. “Our data shows that evolution of novel structures can occur on extremely short time scales. Cecal valve evolution probably went hand-in-hand with a novel association between the lizards on Pod Mrcaru and microorganisms called nematodes that break down cellulose, which were found in their hindguts.” Change in diet also affected the population density and social structure of the Pod Mrcaru population. Because plants provide a larger and more predictable food supply, there were more lizards in a given area on Pod Mrcaru. Food was obtained through browsing rather than the active pursuit of prey, and the lizards had given up defending territories. “What is unique about this finding is that rapid evolution can affect not only the structure and function of a species, but also influence behavioral ecology and natural history,” says Irschick. Results of the study were published March 25 in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. This research was supported by the National Science Foundation and the Fund for Scientific Research in Flanders. Additional members of the research team include Anthony Herrel of Harvard University and the University of Antwerp, Kathleen Huyghe, Bieke Vanhooydonck, Thierry Backeljau and Raoul Van Damme of the University of Antwerp, Karin Breugelmans of the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences and Irena Grbac of the Croatian Natural History Museum.  more

Resolved Question: If I binge ate last night will I put on lots of weight?

Ok, I'm on a diet, and up to last night I hadn't eaten a thing in 1 week 2 days. But last night I binge ate and had: -3 cookies -1 yoghurt -1 chocolate kitkat -1 portion of curry I ate that over the space of 2.5 hours. I tried to throw up after but I couldn't do it. I just retched and nothing came up. The scale says that I have even dropped 2 pounds. I'm going to continue not eating to lose weight, and will continue to exericse. But will all that food put lots of weight on me overtime or would it already have been done by now? :( I'm desperate to lose the weight, I'm a fat, ugly 16 year old who hates her body, so I need to lose the weight.  more

Resolved Question: For all who want to know about Hinduism. I would like your opinion. Thanks?

This is an introduction to Hinduism for mainly non Hindus. It is a well produced video. I think it should be shared by all law enforcement agencies world wide as an introduction to Hinduism. Superb Video on Hinduism Produced by Chicago Police Department CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, April 4, 2008: Several years ago Hinduism Today learned of a training video produced by the Chicago Police Department to educate its officers about each major religion in the Chicago area, including Hinduism. Today, we stumbled across a link to the video (URL above) and it is an excellent presentation. ========================================================= Hinduism Video at : http://www.archive.org/details/gov.doj.ncj.212664.v1.7 Running time 9m 29s The following Transcript is available at : http://bja.ncjrs.gov/diversity/rel_07_hinduism.html (Kevin Dean) It is the oldest religion in the world, and predates Christiantity by 4,000 years. (Dean) Still, the basic tenets of this faith have withstood the test of time and human evolution. (Dean) It is Hinduism, a faith rooted in concepts of good will, tolerance, and harmony. (Dean) Hello, I'm Chaplin Dean with the Chicago Police Department. (Dean) This is the fifth in a series of videos to expand your knowledge and understanding of the many diverse communities within our city. (Dean) Having even a basic knowledge of a person's customs and culture enables police officers to conduct their duties in a more efficient and respectful manner. (Dean) Today, we explore Hinduism. (Dean) [Swame vivakananda] introduced Hinduism to Chicago in 1883, during the parliament of religions. (Dean) Since then, more than 80,000 people of the Hindu faith have settled in the Chicago area. (Dr. Shyam L. Bhatia) Most of them have migrated from India since the middle '60s; they came as engineers, professors, doctors; they got education here. (Dean) But not all Hindus are Indian. (Swami Varananda) No, not necessarily: I am American, for example. (Varananda) It's basically what you believe in that determines it. (Dean) And what do Hindus believe? (Dr. Sudha Rao) We all believe in one supreme lord; we believe in a cabinetry, if you will, of multiple gods and goddesses who are in charge of different cabinets, of kearning, of wealth, and this and, that. (Rao) But ultimately, every Hindu believes there is only one God, one creator. (Rao) And some choose to consider this creator a feminine gender; some consider this a masculine gender. (Varananda) Hindus believe in reincarnation; they believe that after this life, you go to some celestial realm, heaven or maybe a hell, but that's a temporary thing. (Varananda) Then you come back; you're born again, take on another body. (Dean) And Hindus respect all religions as a path to God. (Dean) Hindu gods are honored in temples, whether those be the elaborate community temples, or simple temples within the home. (Dean) Hindus don't go to temple on a specific day of the week, Sunday, for example; temples are open every day, and get quite crowded on Hindu holy days. (Varananda) But a Hindu doesn't go to temple to hear a sermon or to get a talk; he goes primarily to have [darshan], which means "to see God," bow down, pay your respects, offer something, just kind of say hello to God. (Dean) Hindu priests are typically the only people allowed to touch statues of the deities within the temple. (Dean) Photographing deities is not allowed. (Dean) It is not necessary for males to remove hats or for females to cover their heads inside a temple. (Dean) However, all visitors and worshippers are asked to remove their shoes. (Dr. K.V. Reddy) The significance of taking off the shoes is keeping the place clean. (Reddy) This is practiced in all of the east: India, China, Japan. (Dean) Cleanliness of mind and body is important in Hinduism. (Dean) The left hand was traditionally used for hygiene, and many Hindus still use the right hand for handling food or sacred objects. (Dean) It may be considered rude to offer a Hindu something with your left hand. (Dean) Hindus who have recently immigrated to Chicago, or who are here to visit family, may appear uncomfortable or fearful when approached by a police officer. (Dean) One reason is that they are not used to seeing people with guns. (Reddy) In India, at the constables level, they do not wear weapons. (Reddy) The police system in India is similar to in England. (Dr. R.S. Rajan) That's also attributable to the fact that the incidents of gun ownership in India is rather low. (Rajan) Guns are very costly; guns are not affordable; you cannot go out and buy a Saturday-night special anywhere. (Dean) Many Hindus are accustomed to the Western habit of handshaking. (Dean) Others, however, prefer to press their palms together, and give a simple bow. (Reddy) In the East, you always greet in a non-contact way, so that in Hinduism, the method is "Namaste," then bow, and already you brought the good will of the person. (Rao) What basically "Namaste" means is, "I worship the divine within you." (Dean) Hindu women often wear saris. (Dean) These are dresses made of one long piece of cloth wrapped around the body. (Dean) Scarves may also be worn as a measure of modesty. (Dean) Women should not be asked to publicly remove a scarf or unwrap any portion of a sari. (Dean) Hindu women may also strongly oppose the removal of a marriage necklace. (Rajan) A woman won't remove it because it symbolizes marriage; it symbolizes the fact that she is into the sacred state of matrimony. (Rao) Clearly, if you meet someone from my group who will be wearing this, this is a very private and sacred thing to ask, and in fact, the olden tradition taught that this should not even be seen by others. (Dean) As with other Eastern religions, it is preferred that male police officers avoid any physical contact with Hindu women. (Reddy) In Hinduism, very much, the best an officer can do is don't touch the ladies. (Reddy) That's one of the things -- you never see, in the Hindu, in public, a man touching a lady, even his wife. (Dean) The same applies to female officers having contact with Hindu males. (Dean) This is especially true for Swamis, who are Hindu monks recognized by their orange-colored robes. (Dean) Interviews should be conducted in view of others. (Swami Chidananda) It ought to be free from all the scandals; the best thing, if a lady comes, keep the door of the room open, everything open, so that nothing is hiding; nothing's hiding there. (Chidananda) So that's (inaudible). (Dean) Many Hindu women, and some men also, wear forehead markings called [bindis] or [telaks]. (Rao) There is a definite religious, or a sacred component to it. (Rao) Much of the time, we come to the temples, we take our red powder here, we take and apply; the men call it [telak] and women call it [bindi]. (Rao) So this is applied on the forehead, and it represents almost your third eye, through which you can see the world better. (Dean) Within a Hindu home, officers may be asked to remove their shoes. (Dean) Most Hindus are vegetarians, and do not smoke cigarettes. (Dean) It would be disrespectful to smoke or bring meat products into a Hindu home. (Dean) Hindu homes have rooms or special areas used for worship. (Dean) In a nonemergency, always ask permission before entering that area, and handling any objects. (Rajan) Every family has, on some degree or some scale, a place set apart for worship. And devotion to the Lord calls for a higher standard of cleanliness than just a normal thing. (Rajan) We take a bath, we change our clothes, we (inaudible), and then we sit down before the Lord and pray. (Bhatia) Because it's a question of purity; we just feel that everything should be pure and clean. (Dean) Something else officers may encounter in a Hindu home is the swastika symbol. (Dean) Centuries before Adolf Hitler adopted the swastika as the symbol of the Nazi Party, Hindus used the swastika as a religious symbol. (Dean) In fact, "swastika" is a Sanskrit word that translates to "let goodness prevail." (Dean) It is still found on many Hindu articles of faith. (Bhatia) It symbolizes power; it symbolizes [sharti], it symbolizes the goodness of the divine being. (Dean) As with all religions, Hinduism has many different subsets, hundreds of them around the world. (Dean) Still, there are some basic cultural courtesies officers can observe. (Dean) In nonemergencies, remove your shoes when entering a Hindu temple or home. (Dean) When practical, ask permission before entering a sacred area within a home. (Dean) Statues of deities within a temple or home should not be touched unless absolutely necessary. (Dean) Handshakes may be refused. (Dean) A traditional hello involves a slight bow, and the greeting "Namaste." (Dean) It is preferable to hand objects to Hindus using the right hand. (Dean) Most Hindus are vegetarians. (Dean) Marriage necklaces are considered sacred, and should not be touched or removed by police. (Dean) Hindu men and women may be more comfortable dealing with officers of their own sex. (Dean) All of the people we encounter on a daily basis expect to be treated with dignity and respect. (Dean) Those who practice Hinduism are no exception. (Dean) It is our hope that this video will serve to enlighten and foster a new awareness and understanding. (Dean) Thanks for watching, and as always, stay safe.  more

i just recently got out of a relationship, and usaully i would do some sort of drug to help with the pain, but this time i did something unconsciencelly.. i stopped eating! now i love food, i eat so much, and not just one portion...im 5`3 and tipping the scale at almost 170.... the biggest ive ever been was 180. i broke up with my bf 5 days ago and since then i havn`t eaten. ive just been drinking loads of water, sometimes with tyhe green tea mix in it, or this south beach living stuff which is good :) i want to lose weight so my ex comes crawling back to me once he sees me and i can reject him! now that i try to eat or drink ANYTHING, my stomach gets a sharp pain, and now today while brushing my teeth, i swallowed a little bit of toothpaste and just started to gag, i felt like i was gonna throw up! i never did that before!!, will this cause me to become anorexic? btw im also working out during gym!! i know im fat. id like to lose 50 pounds. im not trying to get an eating disorder, but with me not eating because of the break up, this could work in my favor! the whole toothpaste thing, maybe could be a sign that my stomach cant handle ANYTHING but water, which means ive reached the point where i cant go back?! i even tried taking a sip of diet mountain dew and my stomach hurt so bad!! has anybody else done this? can i actually get some sort of results?  more

Resolved Question: why am i GAINING weight?

so, for the past week or two, i've been eating extremely healthy. i mean, mainly fruits and vegetables and very small portions of foods such as pasta, chicken, meat, etc. i have also been working out a lot more. i know not to expect a sudden drastic weight drop. however, i don't understand why in the world i'm GAINING weight. not weight on the scale, but my legs and tummy are getting bigger than before. i know it's not muscle, because my legs are less toned than they were before. i don't understand what's going on. yeah, i'm a girl. but i was "on" last week, so i'm pretty sure that's not it. and there's no possible way in the WORLD i could be eating too much. unless cantolope (sp?), bananas and blackberries now have large amounts of fat. i exercise everyday. i run, i tumble, i cheer (hardcore stuff, not "go team go"). plus i do lots on conditioning every night before bed. and i'm pretty sure i'm not drinking too much water...and what would that have to do with my thighs? i am stressed out, but i don't understand how that could mess me up this much.  more

Resolved Question: Diameter, Circumference, and Radius?

Could someone please explain how to find the answer to these two story problems? A pizza 15 inches inches in diameter is shared by 3 people in the ratio of 4:5:6 pieces. To the nearest tenth, what is the length of the crust for each of the three portions? Next problem: The needle of the scale in the bulk food section of a supermarket is 26 centimeters long. What distance does the tip of the needle travel when it rotates 820 degrees? Use 3.14 for pi and round your answer to the nearest tenth of a centimeter. Please explain how to solve these problems in the simplest possible way. Thank you so much for your help!  more
